How to Join

Joining ESC is a great way to give back to SEAS and the greater University of Virginia community. Involvement in ESC provides opportunities to:

  • Voice student concerns
  • Engage faculty and administrators
  • Provide input on school initiatives
  • Conceive and execute events and programs
  • Gain leadership and teamwork experience
  • Collaborate with student organizations
  • Make a lasting impact

Elected Positions

The executive members of ESC are elected by the undergraduate student body each February and serve for a full year beginning April 1st. All candidates for elected ESC positions must meet the following requirements:

  • Enrolled in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences
  • All candidates running for ESC President must have served on the executive board in an active manner, as prescribed by the current executive board, for at least two semesters
  • All candidates running for ESC executive board positions must have served on the director’s board in an active manner, as prescribed by the current executive board, for at least two semesters
  • Candidates for 4th Year Board President must be a fourth year during his or her term of office (current 3rd years)

Board Positions

The ESC Board is composed of Committee Directors and Representatives. Board members are appointed by the executive members of the council and serve for a full year beginning late April. Applications are made available each March. For Committee Directors, previous committee experience is highly valued, though not required. For Representatives, familiarity with the constituency represented is required.

Committee Positions

Committee members are selected by Committee Chairs and serve for two semesters. Applications are made available each September. Previous experience, current involvement, and enthusiasm are highly valued in the selection process.
